MSt

MSt student graduation

The MSt is a two-year, part-time University of Cambridge research degree, offered by the CJCR in conjunction with the Faculty of Divinity and the Institute of Continuing Education. Committed to the highest academic standards, this rigorous scholarly programme offers you a unique opportunity to familiarise yourself in depth with Jewish-Christian relations from a variety of disciplinary perspectives and acquire a Master's degree from one of the world's foremost universities. The course is available residentially in Cambridge or via e-learning. You may choose to spend part (or all) of your second year working on your dissertation at one of the Austrian, Czech, German, Polish, or Swiss universities with whom we already have, or are currently in the process of establishing, Erasmus agreements. If you are thinking of pursuing a relevant PhD after the MSt, the Faculty of Divinity may recognize the MSt as the first year of study towards your doctorate.

Our students tend to come from a broad range of cultural, academic and professional backgrounds and in any given cohort you are likely to find students of all ages. Some will have a theology or religious studies background, many will not.

Course structure and resources

In the first year of the MSt you would take four taught modules (Foundations, Scripture, History, Culture) and prepare for the dissertation that you would then work on in the second year. Like any other University of Cambridge student, you will have access to the extraordinary wealth of academic resources available in Cambridge, including the University Library and various faculty and college libraries as well as the Woolf Institute's own highly specialised library.

Given the part-time nature of the programme, teaching takes place on two days a week. You will be required to do a substantial amount of reading and will have specific assignments in most weeks. It is important that you assess realistically whether you will be able to shoulder the quite substantial workload.

College membership

All MSt students become members of a College which will provide you with an additional opportunity to benefit from the Cambridge experience. In some cases your College may also be able to offer you accommodation or funding to support your research.

Please note that Jesus College, King's College, Queens' College, Pembroke College, St Catharine's College and St John's College do not admit MSt students.
